On Tuesday, May 19, 2026, Deacon James Wesley Muse, 87, peacefully transitioned from this life at home in Rocky Mount, Virginia. Born on May 8, 1939, he was the oldest of seven siblings born to the late Webster Muse and Virginia Velma Muse. In addition to his parents, Deacon Muse was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Hazel Muse; one daughter, Debbie Muse; three brothers, Bobby Lewis Muse, William T. Muse and Roy Muse.
Deacon Muse was a faithful servant of God, a devoted husband, loving father, brother and a friend to all who knew him. He served faithfully as a deacon at Jerusalem Way of the Cross Church for over 50 years and a member for 53 years, always willing to lend a helping hand, offering wise counsel, and encouraging others in their walk with the Lord. His life reflected kindness, humility, and unwavering faith.
Deacon Muse dearly loved his family and treasured every moment spent with them. Whether sharing stories, attending gatherings, or simply sitting together in fellowship, he made those around him feel valued and loved. His presence brought comfort, laughter, and joy. He dedicated many years of work to General Electric in Salem, Virginia and in his later years worked at Benjamin Franklin Middle School cafeteria where he served as a lunch monitor.
One of his favorite places to be was the Muse Ball Park, where he enjoyed socializing with friends, watching the games, and creating lasting memories with the community he loved so much. Many will remember his warm smile, friendly conversations, and the genuine care he showed to everyone he met.
Deacon Muse was also known for being a great cook. Family and friends especially looked forward to his homemade potato salad, which became one of his signature dishes and a favorite at gatherings and celebrations. The love he poured into cooking was just another reflection of the love he shared so freely with others.
Though our hearts grieve his passing, we rejoice in knowing that Deacon Muse loved the Lord and lived a life dedicated to Him. His legacy of faith, love, and service will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his son, James Cody Muse (Betty), the daughters he raised as his own, Kathy Grogans of Washington, DC; and Arlene Grogans of Rocky Mount, VA; a granddaughter, Khadijah Grogans of Lynchburg, VA; brothers: Billie Muse (Brenda) of Rocky Mount, VA; Frederick Wayne Muse (Loretta) of Hampton, VA; one sister, Annette Walker of Richmond, VA; and a host of loving family and devoted church family.
