George Macon Simmons
“So also, you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.” John 16:22
On June 3, 2025, our Heavenly Father reached down into his garden and plucked the most beautiful flower, our beloved George, to be with him. He was known to most of us as “Toolum”, “Papa” or “Uncle Geroge.”
George was born in Franklin County, VA to the late Dooley and Virginia Simmons on August 18, 1951. He was educated in the Franklin County, VA school system and with Great Onyx Job Corps Conservation Center Mammoth Cave, KY, were he learned his carpenter trade.
Although George never attended church, he was a true believer in Christ until the very end. George was a true life of the party. With the joke he told that make you laugh until your stomach hurt and with his favorite quote “All around the world the same song” that was his way of dismissing you when people and life got on his nerves. George lived life on his on terms. He did whatever he wanted and move how he felt and didn’t care what nobody said about it. That is what made him real.
George was preceded in death by: his father and mother Dooley and Virginia Simmons; biological father, Calvin Holland, Sr.; three brothers Donnell Simmons, Phillip Holland, and Carl Holland; one sister Renita Faye Carr; and two grandchildren Vernessa Preston and Tayveon Joseph; and one special aunt Edna Warren.
George leaves to cherish her memories: five children Ricky (Valerie) Pointdexter of Carterville, GA; Stephanie (Adrian) Joseph of Gulfport, MS; Carolyn Witcher and Tonya Simmons both of Rocky Mount, VA; and Bridgett Nicole Kidd of Penhook, VA; five sisters Sally Hill of Salem, VA, Eunice Holland, Venita Holland, Carol Holland, and Dawn (Eugene) Reynolds, all of Rocky Mount, VA; four brothers, Calvin (Willie Mae) Bernard, Larry Holland, Calvin Holland, Jr., all of Rocky Mount, VA and James Holland of New Rochelle; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. He also leaves three special friends Elwood Holland, Sandy Bernard(cousin) and Willie Wainwright.
George was dearly loved and will be truly missed by his family and friends.
