Deacon Clarence E. McGhee, Sr.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

John 14:27 (NIV)

Today we celebrate the life of a faithful servant of God, Deacon Clarence E. McGhee, Sr., who dedicated his life to the Lord, his family, and his community. A true man of faith, he served God with all his heart.

For over 37 years, he served faithfully at Refuge Temple Church in Roanoke, Virginia and Joyful Light Ministries in Rocky Mount. In 2025, Deacon McGhee was recognized as the oldest-serving deacon in the Virginia Western Diocese COOLJC. He carried the title of “Deacon” with grace and dignity. Desiring to see the churches grow, he was always willing to serve wherever needed. Even as age and the heartache of losing his beloved wife of 68 years weighed upon him, he continued to serve the Lord with steadfast devotion.

Deacon McGhee was born to the late George Washington and Gracie Pearl McGhee on December 6, 1938, in Rocky Mount, Virginia. He attended Franklin County Public Schools in Rocky Mount, and in his younger days, he was known as “Stick McGhee.” Before retiring, Deacon McGhee gave 14 years of dedicated service to the Town of Rocky Mount.

He never met a stranger. He loved to talk and could make you laugh even during difficult times. Giving love in his own special way, he was a man who meant what he said and said what he meant. Even during his failing health, he made sure his children knew he was still “the boss.” His life was a testimony of love, service, and unwavering faith. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his parents, Deacon McGhee was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Beulah McGhee; one daughter, Sherry R. McGhee; two sisters, Christine M. Brown and Allena Williams; and his brothers Wallace, McArthur, and Curtis McGhee.

He leaves to cherish his memory three loving daughters: Debbie Kasey, Cynthia (Kenny) Tanks, and Anita Ellerbe; one son, Clarence Edward McGhee Jr.; one sister, Margaret Loretta (William) Board; 11 grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; his church family; and a host of other relatives and friends.
